I've been thinking about this membership thing for some time, esp. in our very institutionalized-styled s'pore churches(in general). Church membership has become club membership - i.e. if you're a member, you're entitled to certain privileges. This can include anything from discounts for church camps to priority in pastoral visits(I sometimes wonder if it's the sick who need the doctor more urgently or the healthy person('sinners and the righteous' in Christ)). This is perhaps one of the reasons why a church in Indonesia would tell my cross-cultural working friend that they should call themselves disciples of the church than members. Does the term matter? maybe. the motivation and meaning certainly does. And i would say many has lost the disciple 'element' in this member 'status' thing we have today. I hope many will learn from God what it truly means to be a 'member' of His church. Hi Ps Philip,
